The future of health care requires innovative, sustainable solutions to the health human resource crisis that Canada’s health care system is currently facing. The successful integration and retention of internationally trained physicians (ITPs) into the Canadian health care workforce can help to address the health human resource crisis, while advancing the diversity of the Canadian health care workforce.
N4 has published a recommendation report, designed to serve as a roadmap to successfully integrate and retain ITPs into the Canadian health care workforce. The recommendations advance integration and retention without sacrificing Canadian standards for physician credentialling and licensing, which support patient safety and quality of care.
The recommendations were drafted by an N4-facilitated working group, formed by pan-Canadian stakeholders within the pathway to employment of ITPs, including representatives from regulatory bodies, professional associations, bridging programs, and organizations involved in the employment of ITPs. ITPs validated and informed the creation of the work by sharing their valuable lived experience.
