In 2015, Canada made a commitment to settle 25,000 Syrian refugees. The impact on settlement, health and social services cannot be overstated. Services were overwhelmed, interpretation was a challenge, and frontline staff struggled to assure a culturally safe service delivery. There were many lessons learned from those efforts as barriers were broken down and partnerships were forged.
In 2021, Canada made an additional commitment to settle 20,000 Afghan refugees. Many health and social service providers are now looking to leverage the lessons learnt to be better prepared to support this vulnerable population but are also worried about the added complexity of welcoming refugees during the global pandemic.
N4 is pleased to host a panel discussion to share learnings and practical tips on leveraging the lessons from the Syrian refugee settlement efforts to ensure equitable access and experiences for Afghan refugees.
