If we see spirituality as a search for meaning, belonging, interconnectedness and hope, how can leaders create a vision that speaks to these longings in the human soul? How can educational leaders harness spirituality as a force for social transformation? An education system that bridges the gap between reason and spirituality, that honors all aspects of being human, offers glimpses of these possibilities. Saint Paul University is one of those rare spaces in the academia that envisions a spiritual, human, open and engaged education. The person behind this vision is Rector Chantal Beauvais, a transformative leader of many firsts, who dares to bridge separate worlds.
Dr. Beauvais has been the rector of Saint Paul University since 2009. She is the first lay as well as the first female rector. Under her direction and inspired by her drive for change, the University expanded its academic offering, improved the quality of the student experience, strengthened its international presence, and enhanced its internal administration. The transformation of the 173-year-old bilingual centre of learning is palpable in the vitality and relevance of program offerings, the unique 92% level of student satisfaction and the many community partnership programs, to name but a few.
Dr. Beauvais’s term was renewed in 2018 for a three-year period and she continues to hold the space for adaptive change in the present. She is actively involved in public sector associations and committees in the areas of research ethics, social integration, and making higher education accessible to marginalized persons. Her newly developed strategic plan 2020-2025 envisions transformative leadership for the well-being of the planet, the healing of broken human relationships and a respectful dialogue with Canada’s First Peoples.
