The integration of internationally educated health professionals (IEHPs) into Canadian healthcare organizations is crucial for improving access to care and enriching the diversity of the workforce. Recognizing the significant role that IEHPs play, the National Newcomer Navigation Network (N4) has developed an array of tools designed to support the recruitment and retention of these professionals.
IEHPs bring valuable international educational experiences that enhance the quality and cultural competency of care in Canada. Their contributions are pivotal in addressing healthcare gaps, particularly in underserved areas. However, their successful integration into Canadian healthcare settings requires targeted support to ensure they are fully included and able to contribute effectively.
N4’s Commitment to IEHP Success
To address these needs, N4 has engaged with a wide range of stakeholders across Canada, including healthcare employers in acute care, community health, long-term care, health authorities, and government sectors, as well as individuals with lived experience. This collaboration has led to the creation of three essential products:
- Comprehensive Report: Offers in-depth insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating IEHPs into Canadian healthcare. This report serves as a foundational resource for understanding the landscape and identifying best practices.
- Toolkit for Employers: Provides practical strategies and resources for healthcare organizations to recruit, retain, and support IEHPs. The toolkit includes guidelines on fostering inclusive workplaces that value the unique contributions of IEHPs.
- Integration Checklist: A step-by-step guide to help employers ensure that IEHPs are welcomed and supported throughout their employment journey. This checklist is designed to promote effective onboarding, ongoing professional development, and community integration.
