During 2020, many healthcare organizations were moved by the disparities that were magnified by the current pandemic, including its impact and our collective raising of consciousness towards racism. Like other sectors, many made internal and public commitments to address systemic racism and focus on addressing health inequities in accessing or experiencing care. Our host organization CHEO was among them.
Building on its strong foundation of community partnerships, CHEO has joined with the CHEO Foundation and CHEO Research Institute to do this work. Motivated by a desire to foster consistency of experiences with their services for its internal and external stakeholders, as well leverage economies of effort, they have a single Steering Committee, composed of 20 staff, medical staff, volunteers and family advisors with lived experience as members of historically marginalized communities, representing the 3 organizations.
Many healthcare organizations across Canada are doing similar work however they lack a single place to connect, learn and collaborate with each other. For this reason, N4 has offered to host their collaborations within its platform. This effort will be led by our CHEO leader, Christine Kouri. We are therefore confident that CHEO will highlight the needs of marginalized and vulnerable newcomers to the focus of this work. N4 will provide support by providing the Resource Toolkit to house and share their work, and a group within the Meeting Place to allow conversations to be easily captured, shared and searchable. To be involved, contact Christine Kouri through our Membership Directory. If you would like to set up a similar working group on the N4 platform, send us an email to get started.
