International Translation Day, September 30, pays homage to the diversity of language professionals who provide translation, interpretation and terminology services to a multitude of organizations and professions. From diplomatic discourse to conversations with health and social service providers, the role of the translator and interpreter is of utmost importance in interpersonal and international discussions.
Marie Serdynska, a professional in the health and social services sector, is the Coordinator for Sociocultural Consultation and Interpretation Services (SCIS) of the Montreal Children's Hospital, McGill University Health Centre. She works with a diverse team of interpreters.

She explains the following: “Interpreters in healthcare settings act as invaluable bridges to understanding patients' and families' health concerns, cultural beliefs, and practices. Interpreters assist healthcare professionals in making accurate assessments and treatment plans compatible with the user's sociocultural realities. Patients and families are reassured by the presence of the interpreter, empowering them to engage fully in the consultation process and decreasing risks of error.”
Let us recognize and thank the language heroes who facilitate the important dialogues that are essential to good health, international relations, and communications on all levels.
N4 salutes our own translator, Rose Gorrie, on this special day that recognizes the valuable contribution of her profession.
