June marks Pride Month in Canada, a time for us all to examine our role in creating equity for LGBTQ+ people. Unfortunately, not all countries embrace these values. Global statistics reflect the increasing levels of violence against minority sexual orientation and gender identity expression (SOGIE) populations. This has resulted in increasing numbers of asylum seekers from the LGBTQ+ community. Canada has made substantial progress in recognizing the intersectional vulnerabilities of LGBTQ2S+ newcomers.
To learn about one community organization’s efforts, join us on June 23 for this upcoming N4 webinar:
Immigrant and Refugee Services for SOGIE Diverse newcomers ( LGBTQ2S+ services)
Speaker: Kelly Ernst, PhD (VP, Vulnerable Populations at the Centre for Newcomers in Calgary)
This webinar will provide an overview of the Centre for Newcomers service model for LGBTQ+ refugees, the National LGBTQ+ Guidelines Project, and how their work can be replicated for LGBTQ+ and other vulnerable populations.
