Canada has yet to reunite a single family with relatives who are trying to escape conflict-racked Sudan, while diaspora groups are demanding the federal government do more to end a yearlong civil war.
The fighting that erupted last April between duelling militias in the northeastern African country has forced out at least 8.5 million people in what the United Nations calls the largest internal displacement crisis in the world. And so far, Canada has done little to stop it, said Imad Satti,...

“We're growing our permanent population at a pace we can handle,” Fraser said in a Tuesday interview on CTV News Channel’s Power Play with Vassy Kapelos.
The minister’s comments were in response to a question about remarks made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s earlier in the day, when he admitted a “massive spike” in temporary immigration levels under his government...

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the government wants to rein in the number of temporary immigrants coming to the country, saying the situation needs to be brought “under control.”
“Whether it’s temporary foreign workers or whether it’s international students in particular, that have grown at a rate far beyond what Canada has been able to absorb,” Trudeau said at a housing announcement in Dartmouth, N.S.
“To give an example, in 2017, two per cent of Canada’s population was made up of temporary...

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says federal immigration limits are undercutting her province's ability to fill jobs, grow the economy and aid those fleeing violence in war-torn Ukraine.
Smith called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government Wednesday to immediately double to 20,000 the number of allotments to Alberta under the Provincial Nominee Program and add 10,000 on top of that for Ukraine evacuees.
Smith said Ottawa has given Alberta 9,750 spots for 2024 and that falls well short of...

For the first time, the Canadian government will set targets for temporary residents allowed into the country, Immigration Minister Marc Miller says.
This is being done, Miller said, to ensure “sustainable” growth in the number of temporary residents coming into Canada.
“Starting this fall, for the first time, we will expand the immigration levels plan to include both temporary resident arrivals and permanent resident arrivals,” Miller told reporters in Ottawa on Thursday.
Miller said as of 2023,...

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday rejected Quebec's request for additional powers over immigration, saying the province has more control over newcomers than any other Canadian jurisdiction.
In response, Premier Francois Legault said Quebec would "study all its options" to quickly reduce the number of asylum seekers and temporary foreign workers in the province, which currently stands at more than 500,000 people.
Trudeau made the comments to reporters after a meeting with Legault at the...
